" Just found your website. Thank you for all your hard work putting this together. Have just been looking through and found some great shots at Peterborough. My late father worked on the Railways from 1937 to 1981 with a break of six years in the army during the war. Oh how he would have loved to have seen all these. Thanks again. "

" Hi I am enjoying looking at your photo pages. Thank you! I was previously employed by Erie Lackawana RR in N.W. Pennsylvania,USA. Our railroad at that time was the shortest rt.between Chicago and N.Y. city;and the only one makeing money taken over by Conrail. I worked for the track department. Have worked section gang,Tie gang, crossing gang, raising gang, crossing watchman,Bus driver, truck driver and work train crew . Now retired at 67 I still have a great love for the rail road. It has been the most enjoyable job of my life and has contributed to my still good health by having worked outside every day. "

" Hello Roy, I 'stumbled' across your webite whilst searching for Trafford Park M.P.D., info, being as an ex: B.R cleaner/fireman at this depot from Apr'64 until June'66. I then I transferred to become a 'booked fireman' to 9D Newton Heath, where I saw out 'the death of steam' eventually leaving B.R. in Oct'69. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing once again the above 2 locations, and also the relevant locos so allocated, and others besides! I fulfilled my ambition so early on in life, as it was not only a hobby it was also a job, and I picked up a wage too! A truly excellent site Roy, very sincere thanks indeed. "

" Hello Roy, Will explore your web site further, but as the first dip was delighted to see images of "Newfoundland".Remember seeing her on the midland main line in 1962.Spent all day seeing * 9Fs pulling iron ore. Was about to head home with my dog but as an 8 year old spotter ran back to see a magnificent green Jube pulling the "Thames Clyde Express". Have her in my memory today as good as any photo. Thanks "

" What a brilliant site, Roy. I took loads of pictures with a Box Brownie and Zeiss Ikon folding camera in my trainspotting days in the 50s and early 60s, but to my eternal regret, none have survived. Well done for your efforts in preserving and displaying yours. Hull and York were my home territory - you haven't got a photo of a D49 Hunt or Shire lurking anywhere, have you? "
Richard Miller

" Hello Roy. I found your Site by chance. By happy chance! Some lovely pictures bringing back many memories. Like Tony Gayle, I too was brought up in Stockport. I remember well the visiting Crosti boilered class 9s. Wonderful, after all these years, to see that shot at Edgeley with Apollo in the background. I wonder; was that shot taken on a Sunday morning? I can almost smell the creosote, coal smoke, hot oil and steam (yes, steam has a smell). Many thanks for sharing. Best wishes, Roy G. "

" Hello Roy, I am an expat from Peterborough who now lives in Wiltshire. I typed "Nutty Fletton" into Google and was directed to your website due to a previous visitor (Ivor Jackson) asking about Nutty. I lived within earshot of the ECML near Farcet and spent much of my youth (late 50s/early 60s) at various vantage points by the lineside - Yaxley station,Hicks' Bridge, Fletton Bridge, Fairground, North station, Spital Bridge, New England shed, Walton Crossing etc. The closest of these to home was Hicks' bridge which was really a crossing of the ECML by the wagonway which carried 4-wheel clay wagons between the pits and the brick presses at Fletton. This must have been at least a mile long, was double track and operated by an endless cable. It turned through at least two 90 degree corners and at these points the cable was turned by flanged discs on a horizontal axle. These were regularly greased by a workman who had a refuge hut about half way along. By the side of this wagonway Hicks' bridge carried a footpath which proved to be a good vantage point for the main line. Parallel to the main line and crossing the footpath at one end of the bridge was the line on which Nutty operated. I wish that I had taken more notice at the time but in those days that little railway was not much more than a distraction to more major events taking place as Pacifics, V2s, B1s, WDs and much more passed by on the mainline. The brickworks line was 2ft 6in gauge (I think) and carried wagonloads of formed bricks to the kilns for firing. Nutty would appear every couple of hours or so with the driver sitting side-saddle with his knees poking out of the cab door. Nutty was/is a 4-wheel Sentinel product with a vertical boiler and was built in 1929. When that brickworks closed Nutty went either directly or indirectly to the narrow gauge museum at Towyn although another website now suggests that it is now back in the Peterborough area as a static exhibit. I seem to remember wondering, as a boy,if this loco was diesel powered as it sounded rather like an electric sewing machine as it coasted into the Hicks' brickworks. I now know better and wish that I had taken photos of the whole system at the time. Memories were also brought back by your photo of the V2 approaching Walton level crossing and the interspliced tracks that brought the 5 tracks down to 4 for the crossing and then opened out again soon after. Oh Happy Days!! Keep up the good work and thanks for the entertainment of looking back at your local pictures. "

" Hi, I'm researching my family history and have found that my Great Grandfather worked at Rosegrove Railway Station in Burnley for a very long time. He first started as a "Coke Burner" and eventually became "Railway Goods Inspector" at Rosegrove. I only have one existing photo of him and wondered if there might possibly be more out there among all you Trainspotters. Who knows, someone me even have memories of him. His name was Albert Hirst born in Burnley 17th May 1882, died at Saltburn Street, Rosegrove on September 25th 1955. I am told his nickname was "Bowie", amongst many, on account of his bandy legs. I know it's a long shot, and I'm possibly not even on the appropriate website (if there is one), but any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Craig Simpson Burnley, Lancashire. "

"CONGRATULATIONS!!!! ... AND THANKS. Roy, I have just found your site during a lazy surf on a gloomy Sunday morning. Blimey have you increased my blood flow with all these amazing photographs around the Peterborough area. It is wonderful that you guys take the trouble to share your enthusiasm with folk like me. I was born in the '40's and have live all my life in March (31B). From our kitchen window I could see the whole of the mpd and on Sundays there would be in the region of 200 engines 'on shed'. My father worked the railways and as a youngster spent may happy hours with him to the envy of my 'spotter' friends. I could go on but guess by now you have started yawning so I will stop. Thank you again for making my day. "

"My thanks for a particular evocative site. I really believe WE people (you know who you are) are luckier than the ones who went before or those who came behind. God bless steam and people like you who preserve the memories for others. When I die and go to Hell, the first person I'll stick a red hot trident in is Doctor Bloody Beecham the man who engineered the total destruction of a way of life dependent on technology built and operated by the common working man of Great Britain! May your site expand and prosper."

"Site for memories. I worked slow goods from Ferme Park, Hornsey with ex wd 2- 8- 0 to New England, as a 17year old fireman. You could load the fire box well up at the back and sit on the "bucket " seat for miles! You had to watch the water gauge carefully though, as they could be tricky. The writing was on the wall for BR even in 1951/52 so when called for N/s to the R. A.F. decided to finish with the Railway. " Clear road ahead "and happy surfing to all enthusiasts out there."
William Golder

"hi roy....just happened to come across your site by accident...but wot can i say..u have done a great job...but i am lookin for any pics of the derby friargate area from the lner days upto closure....hope u can help as i have not been able to find any so far..."

"Lots of wonderful photos thanks. I used to frequent Edgeley Sheds, Stockport as a kid; also Heaton Mersey where my Uncle worked. My childhood house (Lloyd Street) backed onto Jubilee Sidings (now the site of a school) on the spur line at Heaton Norris, Stockport. Vividly remember two 0-6-0 47*** locos working this siding, to be replaced with diesel 0-6-0's. Used to push the box wagons around on a Sunday when the sidings were deserted!! Also visited Crewe quite frequently around 1962/63. Cheers.."
Tony Gayle

"Roy, Stumbled a cross this site and have really enjoyed spending a couple of hours wandering through it. You really did see some of the rare and pioneering engines, such as the LMS and SR prototype diesels, sadly lost to the nation forever in the 60s, at a time when we were destroyng the railways as fast as we could, and forgetting our history in favour of concrete tower blocks to live in, and 'inter city' or nothing for the remain of ther railway, bypassing the small communities that made our country what it was. A beautiful throwback to a simpler, albeit dirtier time, when we still have villages, communties and railways werent just there to make money, they were a link to the rest of the country!"
Paul Smith

"I'm looking for photos of Mold Junction shed around early 60's to help with model of same.my father Goronwy was at Chester Northgate station for a few years and we lived in the end house next to the railway opposite the shed.      "Memories. Kopped all the Deltics and Baby Deltics down at Oakleigh Park (about 8 stations from King's Cross). Just wished I had been old enough and smart enough to photograph my years of train-spotting. Rosebud indeed! Thank goodness someone had the foresight to do so. Well done."

"Roy - just wanted to say congratulations and thank you for the site. I share your fondness for the railways - particularly for the days of steam. I'm 52 - so happily old enough to remember and miss those days. Your photos are really fascinating. Thanks again - Phil ..... - Stirlingshire"
Phil

"Thanks Roy for a superb collection of REAL puffers as a boy I lived close to the Spital bridge here in Peterborough under which there was much shunting sorting out and the main line to the north so I saw a variety of engines from Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley right down to the little 0-4-0 saddle tank shunters the whole area was a mecca to steam enthusiasts with marshaling yards wagon works and maintainance sheds plus of course the fabled North Station When I was a boy engine drivers were close to royalty and it was nothing to see a waiting fireman or driver polishing his engine such was the pride they had in working in a prestige job like LMS or LNER railways Sadly this waned and engines became dowdy and there was not the pride any more also the advent of the diesel diminished my interest considerably. Your site takes me back to my youth and that is reason enough to put you in my favourites list and make many visits to your splendid site ...Thanks Again"
Bruce

"Joli, merci pour votre site. Cordialement,"

"Hi.. Just found your site tonight.. Saw some pics of 'old favourites' long one. 31914 "W" tank in Kettering for one! Good old 70B engine.. Also nice to see a shot of 76069 on Feltham Shed in 1965.. Ironic, as thats the choice for the new "Bachamann" Br Std Class 4 2-6-0 with the later crest.. Excellent!! What a pity that Cohens wasn't another Barry. They had some gems in there!! Cheers IAN."
Ian Temple

"Well organized collection. I did most of my trainspotting around the Warrington area 1955-68. Pity they didn't have digital cameras in those days."

"Enjoyed the photos. Memories of hearing wagons being shunted at Peterborough East and watching the double set of crossing gates shutting at Walton in the early 1960s, and visiting Werrington Junction box, New England MPD and Cohen's Kettering in the later 1960s all rushed back."

"Some time ago I left an entry in your guest book. In that entry I asked if anyone remembered my father and grandfather Sidney Tappin and dad Wally Tappin, as top link drivers at Kings Cross. Shortly after that I changed my email address.I should still dearly love to hear from anyone that was around at The Cross at the same time. Thank you again for your wonderful site that certainly evokes deep feelings of nostalgia"
Brenda leman ( Tappin )

"Sidney Tappin's regular engine between 1953 and 1956 was 60029 'Woodcock' and his fireman for this period was Frank Mayes. Hope that helps." - Roy

"It would nice to see more archive 35 mm colour transparencies on the "net", I suppose the photographers who took them in the 50's and early sixties may either not still be with us, or due to their mature years, not inclined to involve themselves in high tech . I would like to hear from anyone out there who collects 35 mm colour transparencies depicting BR steam, a hobby to share if there ever was."
Alan Sainty

"I used to get into Eastleigh Yard/Sheds as a teenager on Saturday am's in the early/mid 60's with my school friend John Wheatley. I've a few colour slides particularly Lord Beaverbrook (BB34054) and a 'coffee pot'. Wish i'd taken more! The drivers used to give us a ride up the yard if we were lucky. Those were the days!"

Albert Horton

"Some brilliant photos that bring back many happy and nostalgic memories to me! Full marks for putting them on the web for others to enjoy! For me, my local line in the 50s/60s was the Southern Region at Surbiton with its BOB, WC and MN steam, together with the "Warships" and the BRCW type 3s. Holidays were often taken in Scotland where I could watch the NBL and BRCW type 2s at work in Aberdeenshire. Happy days indeed! Richard "
Richard Dyett

"Excellent photos. Real nostalgia. The photo of the AL6 at Rugby is interesting because it shows at least one of the class was delivered without a yellow warning panel that was considered standard for new locos by then."

"Well constructed site. Well done Roy. Enjoyed looking at this. I always regret not having taken photos in my steam spotting days on LMS Birmingham-London line. Sad to see all those steamers in the scrapyards! Regards, Rob"

"Enjoyed your site! Especially the shots of non-preserved diesel locos. There are so few photos of diesels from the 1960s around. And there's something special about B&W photos. Thanks for including the diesels despite not being keen on them yourself."

"Roy, Just looked at your diesel page and had to write again. I remember 10001 and the SR locos at Derby A pal and I did a "Great Circular Tour" from Edinburgh about that time and saw them there. Great days! Why-o-why were they not preserved? Regards Jim "

"Enjoyed your website, interesting photos. I have have passed your site on to webpal in New Zealand who is a railfan. Your site took me back to the great but sad days of the 1960's. Thanks. " What was that A4 by the way, the number looks readable. Yours Aye, Jim"

"Excellent images - I'm a bit of a sucker for B&W photos as they convey more atmosphere I think and your photos really do capture the atmosphere of their subject."

"An absolute goldmine of historical photographic material. The diesel views represent many unrecorded scenes from a long gone era never published before. (Sorry, Roy, diesel born and bred!!) "

"Certainly brings the memories flooding back. My personal favourites were D407 at Polmadie and the AL6 at Rugby. Also found the scrapyard scenes interesting. What was the A4 at Darlington - does anyone know?"
Keith Gunner

"I also found your website by chance. Although predominantly a Southern man, I found your pictures very nostalgic and they brought back many happy hours of spotting from 1956 onwards. Will revisit to see if you add more! [By the way, D95XX photo is a Clayton"

"Just found your website by off chance. How odd, that I myself was a spotter at the same time as you, at peterborough. I reconise all the spots of where your photos were taken. I used to go onto the stations at the North & East, but eventually got both rai "
